Home cooked meals are a must in our home and one of my family’s favorite meals believe it or not is Sloppy Joes. Now if you remember way back when, there was a commercial that showed a family enjoying their meal of Sloppy Joe that consisted of ground beef with a mixture that came out of a can. I set out to come up with my own version with out the use of the canned version. Below is the result of my experiment.
Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
1 pound of lean ground beef or veggie crumbles
1 small onion diced finely
1/2 green pepper diced finely
Olive Oil
1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup of ketchup
3 tsp of light brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Brown the ground beef, drain if necessary after cooking
Drizzle the pan with olive oil and saute the onions and peppers
Return the beef to the pan and mix together, and reduce the heat
Meanwhile, in a bowl add the garlic powder, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar and mix well
Add the salt and pepper to taste
Once the sauce is mixed well, add to the pan with the browned beef and mix well
Heat the meat mixture for another 20 minutes and it is ready to serve.
We like to serve on buns or open faced, either way the family enjoys it and Mama does too, since it’s so easy to make. Enjoy!
