Teaching the Children to Give

by drmommy on December 11, 2009

This holiday season we have decided to Go Retro! What does that mean exactly?  We have toned down the Christmas lists and have requested the children truly think about what they may need not necessarily ‘want’.  After much thought and revisions of their lists..I received their final drafts.

Some of the requested items consisted of:

  • Toms Shoes – with each purchase a child in Guatemala receives a new pair of shoes
  • Toiletries – something that is always needed, especially with teens
  • Money – to go shopping at the Thrift Store – they love shopping there and at consignment shops, name brands are not necessary
  • Board Games  – a gift that the entire family will enjoy for years
  • Time – this one is extra special – they want more time to spend with us, more family time – this is priceless and long lasting
  • Donation to a ministry – we chose One City Ministries – this ministry is building a wall around their future site of the Light Village.  The Light Village is a home for 80 to 100 orphans in the Manafwa district.  We donated money and will be sending a Christmas card with our pictures and letters.  We are connecting with 2 children and hope to one day meet them in person.

We will also be baking cookies and other goodies to bring to the emergency shelter near our church and also distribute to some of our neighbors.

Writing these words gets me all choked up, because all our hard work is paying off.  The lesson we instill on a daily basis are not going unheard.

We should not wait for a failing economy to make us realize how very lucky we are.  Going retro is a way a life and one we have chosen to instill in our children.  Building memories is more important than the latest and greatest electronic game.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year!
