Are you Content?

by drmommy on January 18, 2010

I’ve been wanting to write this post for quite some time.  The feeling of contentment is one that many have a difficult time accepting.

With everything that is happening around us, recession, earthquakes and so much more…how content are you?

Having a healthy family, a home to live in, a loving relationship are all reasons to be content.  When growing up I always dreamed of living in a mansion with my every need taken care of. Of course those were silly childhood dreams and as I grew up, the reality of life hit me.

Gone are those days of wanting bigger and better things, being a mom to 5 children and teaching them to be happy and content with what has been provided for them is a bigger dream and challenge.  Thankfully I have a loving husband who understands the importance of teaching and implementing such values in our children at an early age.

Now don’t be mistaken, I too, fell prey to the routine that many of us parents fall into.  What routine?  The one where we feel we need to give our children everything we never had.  I soon woke up from that delusion and understood that giving everything is not the answer.  Sharing the importance of appreciating what you have, and giving to those that don’t have the possibilities or opportunities is much more important.

So, going back to the original question regarding contentment…it has been a long road but one that has been enlightening.  My heart aches when I see children walking in the streets crying out for their mommies.  The devastation that is out in the world is much more important than having the latest and greatest tech toys or fashions.

My mission and heart felt passion is to teach my children that this world is so much greater than material items.  The joy of seeing a child or mom smile because they have food and water is much more satisfying.  Watching your children smile when you walk into a room, watching them sleep peacefully in their beds is much more satisfying.

Yes, I am truly content with my family, my life and so much more.  My passion is to help others that are in need and my mission will continue.  What mission? The mission of instilling the Going Retro philosophy in each and every family that truly wants to feel content and happy.  Who doesn’t want that?

Wow, Daisy it is like you are in my brain. The hubby and I were just talking about this tonight in the car…how content and blessed we are but how we don’t feel that is translating to our kids. Their sense of contentment is so much more externally focused than we want it to be. We are making a purposeful intention this year to remind them of how blessed they are by looking for ministry opportunities appropriate for their age. Thanks for a great article!

Great post — kids have way too many “things” and not enough service opportunities. Only through service to others can we learn compassion.
