The Power of Family Nights
Faithful Chronicles — By Dr. Mommy on May 20, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Being a mom of 5 children, family is very, very important to me. There was a time that I thought I would never get married much less have children. Well, judging by the fact that we will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary this year and the fact that I now have 5 children, it is evident that our Lord had bigger and better plans for me.
It stands to reason with my love for families that I would gravitate towards family ministries…with the beginning being my program called Reserved Only, where it challenges the parents to instill the 3R’s — Respect, Responsibility and Renewal.
The Power of Family Nights is very important to get your family communicating and having fun as a family. Too often we find ourselves running in 20 different directions and forget to focus on our families. It is not done intentionally, it’s just the way our lives are programmed. Having a large and very busy family we don’t have the opportunity to eat together as a family every evening, but we still manage to have dinner together on weekends and a couple nights throughout the week.
We have also implemented family nights where we have activities as a family. All of them are based on bible scriptures, so they are also learning while having fun. One of our first activities involved toothpaste. We took craft paper and covered our dining table and gave each child a tube of toothpaste. The rule was to squeeze all the toothpaste out, so of course they were very excited to make a mess. Then they were told to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. After many trials, they gave up and all said it was impossible to do.
The lesson was this: The Bible teaches us to hold our tongues…because once the words come out, it is impossible to take them back. No matter how much you wish to take them back, an unforgettable impression has already been made. This lesson was one that left a deep impression in our home, and they are reminded everyday. Having teens in the home with ranging hormones, it is near impossible to have a quiet, peaceful home, but remembering this lesson helps.
We enjoy our family nights and will be sharing more of the different games we play along with the lessons, so be sure to come back weekly to see the latest game we played.
