Willow – A Review

Reviews / Giveaways — By Dr. Mommy on April 27, 2009 at 9:22 am

As a mom to 5 children, I like to stay up to date with all the latest trends that teens are experiencing.  Having 3 teens makes it harder to keep up with it all but I try:)

So, you can imagine when I was given the opportunity to read the book Willow by  Julia Hoban.  This book describes the topic of ‘cutting’ in full detail.  Have you heard of it??  I was introduced to it briefing by my oldest daughter but after a long talk we determined that it was just a way to get attention.  But this book, definitely showed the meaning in a different way.  This teen was inflicting pain upon herself to cover the deeper pain she was experiencing.  Thankfully she meets another teen that discovers her secret and is determined to stop her from destroying her life.

It all begins when the character named Willow age 16 was involved in a deadly accident which ended in killing both her parents.  She blames herself and numbs the reality of losing her parents, friends, old home and the fact that she is living with her older brother with the act of ‘cutting’.  Follow the life that Willow now leads and the way she covers her deep pain with the act of cutting.

I recommend this book to parents of all teens to prepare yourselves.  This is something that is quite common in the teens of today and the reason why communicating with your teens is very important.  I really appreciate the opportunity I had to read this book.  If you have the opportunity to read this book, be sure to pick it up, have your teen read it and discuss it in depth.  You’ll be glad you did.

The Chronicles continue…

Will read the book, thanks for the recc. Cutting is so prevalent today even with christian teen’s. Sad but believing for the victory for them!
The more talk we do on subject, the less shaming it becomes!
